On May 17, 2022, the 21st edition of the Design Automation & Embedded Systems Event took place at Evoluon in Eindhoven. During the annual D&E Event, Frank de Bont gave a lecture on How to apply FPGA for Hardware acceleration.

Traditional processors are excellent for performing complex control functions. However, they are less suitable for applications that have to process large amounts of data.

With the increasingly smarter and faster world we live in, the amount of data processing is increasing exponentially. Hardware acceleration is needed to close the widening gap between the desired data processing speed and what a traditional processor can process. In more and more applications, we see that hardware acceleration is applied to stay ahead of the competition.

Let’s take a look at how FPGAs can be applied as hardware accelerators for different application areas. In this presentation we will discuss what is hardware acceleration. Why do we need it? Where is it applied and, last but not least, how do we achieve this with the help of FPGAs.
